The "A" Float is an arrow-shaped concrete floating structure built from a combination of precast and cast-in-place concrete and assembled into one piece in the graving dock. The unique shape of this float provides a berth on each side of the "arrow shaft" for the high speed passenger-only ferry that will serve commuters between Bremerton and Seattle, and a berth on one side of the "arrowhead" for the smaller Horluck Ferry.

Concrete Technology Corporation was chosen as the design/build float fabricator for this project and assumed administration of the owner's existing design contract.

Concrete Floating Structure

240' long x 145' wide arrow-shaped floating structure

Features

Post-tensioned - This complex float is post-tensioned longitudinally, transversely and diagonally to resist the bending forces from the waves of storms and marine traffic.

Selectively Foam-filled - The float is primarily open-celled, but selected cells are filled with polyurethane foam so that stability will be maintained in the event of collision damage.

Unique Shape - The floating pier was to be integrated into the existing facility and to provide berthing for different classes of vessels. The arrow shape resulted and was constructed of one piece for maximum durability.
