Located at the western end of the Aleutian island chain, Eareckson Air Force Base on Shemya Island is subjected to the harsh wind and wave climate of the North Pacific Ocean.
Twelve ton dolos were used as the armor facing of 440 feet of revetment around a dock and sheet pile area that had been subject to beach erosion.
The dolos were selected as a preferred alternative to the use of 20-ton rock, which was not available locally.
A total of 929 pieces were cast in Tacoma and shipped by barge to Shemya where they were randomly placed in two layers over the underlayer rock.
