This nearly one-mile-long precast bridge connects the Hawaiian Island of Oahu to Ford Island in Pearl Harbor and offers a floating center drawspan to accommodate large ships.

The U.S. Navy wanted to improve access to Ford Island in order to develop and better utilize this valuable asset.   With a design/build competition, they developed a bridge that would provide the needed access, and also blend into the historic area aesthetically.

The solution was a 4,700 foot long pile supported bridge with a 930 foot long moveable floating concrete drawspan in the center.  Two articulated steel transition spans ramp down to the floating section.  Construction time was only 27 months.

Features

Optimized girder spacing - the girder span and girder spacing are maximized using high strength concrete to minimize the number of girders required. Overnight release strengths of up to 7,200 psi were used.

650 feet wide opening - the world's largest moveable span opening. It is designed to accommodate the passage of aircraft carriers.

Low profile - The floating drawspan offers no height restriction for passing ships and blends aesthetically with the surroundings.

Precast segmental Construction - High quality, dense, heat cured pontoon walls offer superior durability and speed of construction.

Epoxy-coated rebar - Pipeline epoxy coating on all rebar for corrosion resistance.

Post-tensioning - Longitudinal and transverse post-tensioning across all construction joints offers crack control, durability and a leak-free structure.

Increased concrete cover - 3 inches clear cover specified by the Navy for greater protection of reinforcing.

Silica fume additive - 5% silica fume added for denser, more durable concrete.
